Efficient oxidation of p-nitrotoluene catalyzed by manganese
dioxide and N-hydroxylphthalimide

Abstract: p-nitrobenzoic acid was prepared by using manganese dioxide(Mno2 and N
hydroxyphthalimide (NHP1)as catalysts to efficiently catalyze the oxidation of p-nitrotoluene
The conditions of the oxidation reaction were optimized. It was found that in the presence of
10%(molar ratio) NHPI and 10%(molar ratio) Mno as the catalysts, nitrotoluene was
converted at a rate of 97% and p-nitrobenzoic acid was harvested at an isolated yield of 89% af
ter 4 h of catalyzed oxidation at 110 C under an oxygen pressure of 0.4 Mpa

摘要:采用N-羟基邻苯二甲酰亚胺(NHPI)和二氧化锰(Mn())作为催化剂催化对硝基甲苯的氧化反应以制
备对硝基苯甲酸;对反应条件进行了优化.结果表明,采用10%(与原料的摩尔比)NHPI和10%(与原料的摩
尔比)MnO)2作为催化剂,在110C、氧气压力0.4MPa下反应4b,对硝基甲苯的转化率为97%,对硝其苯甲酸
的分离产率为89%

p-nitrobenzoic acid has been extensively used as an intermediate in the manufacture of medicine, dye
and drugs, etc. Currently its industrial production is based on the oxidation of p-nitrotoluene, which re
quires stoichiometric oxidants such as nitric acid], potassium permanganate. and sodium dichromate i
that always generate a great quantity of waste. Therefore, it is imperative to develop green synthetic
routes, especially aerobic catalytic oxidation route to preparing -nitrobenzoic acid. It has been found that
in the presence of cobalt salt, manganese salt and bromide anion as the combinatory catalyst, nitrobenzo-
ic acid can be obtained in acetic acid solvent in a yield of 86% with the assistance of molecular oxygen as an
oxidant However, the use of corrosive bromide ion and higher reaction temperature (around 175 C)
