Foreword
This translation has been made based on the original Japanese Industrial
Standard revised by th
le Minister of International Trade and Industry
hrough deliberations at the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee
in accordance with the Industrial Standardization Law. By this revision
dis G 4401: 1983 was withdrawn and replaced by this Standard
As the result of the investigation of JIS to harmonize with International
Standard carried out in 1995 to 1997, JIS G 4401 corresponding to
International Standard, ISO 4937: 1980 Tool steels was newly established
in order to avoid confusion in the market and became double Standards
or the same application. On the occasion of the publication of ISO/
FDIS 4957: 1998 which was revised with japanese proposal empioyed
as the result of the subsequent activities of JJIS to harmonize with
International Standard, this revision is made for conformity with"Modifie
evel of ISO/EC Guide 21: 1999 Adoption of International Standards
as regional or national standards, as well as for adaptation to the domestic
market needs
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some parts of this Standard
may conflict with a patent right, application for a patent after opening
to the public, utility model right or application for registration of utility
model after opening to the public which have technical properties. The
relevant Minister and the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee
are not responsible for identifying the patent right, application for a
patent after opening to the public, utility model right or application for

said technical properties
