Abstract: The survey and assessment of the estimation on ice loads are presented. The description and
definition of ice loads are given, and the categorization of prediction techniques and difficulties a
discussed. Analysis theories and numerical simulation efforts are reviewed and the characteristics of
those theories and approaches are analyzed. The efforts are made to pinpoint the advantages and
disadvantages of those theories and approaches. Recommendations for further research and develop
ment are made

0 ntroduction
Geography of the arctic refers to the north of the Arctic Circle, with a total area of 21 mil
lion square kilometers including the Arctic Ocean, and about 8 million square kilometers island
and mainland areas of the Arctic have been divided by the countries surrounding the Arctic

the North Arctic Circle which is regarded as the Middle East of the future

in the Arctic has been shrinking year by year. The Northern Sea Route((NSR), which was his
torically impassable, has been opened up for a small number of commercial ships during sum
mer time. Recently, the USA government announced permitting further drilling in certain ar
eas offshore
Alaska. The Canadas National Shipbuilding Purchasing Strategy (NSPS)has
planned to purchase an Arctic icebreaker named" John G Diefenbaker, which will be put in
to service in 2017 and will play an important role in the Canadas Northern Strategy. All these

Arctic shipping and Arctic development face a variety of risks. The interaction between a
ship and ice is a complex process. The magnitude of ice loads depends on the inherent char-
acteristic of ice, the ice-structure interaction form, the structures geometry and dimension, the
